"Did you know that they will accept single sisters over 50 as Bethelites once they get their bachelors degree in law?"
???? There's a Bachelors in Law? Do you perhaps mean Juris Doctor...a law degree? You mean I still have a shot at Bethel? :)
well, folks, this little mermaid just got back from the sad she had to attend w/her husband so as to keep a measure of peace (we're in the process of working out compromises...you know how it goes) i was pretty mad by the end of the day (thank god it ended at 4:00) mostly because i learned some new things that i would never have guessed in a million years.. did you know that satan is setting up artificial "refuges" as a counterfeit to jehovah's "true refuge"which is...his organization???
now satan's "false refuges" are pretty damn bad, like, for instance, "independent thinking.
" no, siree bob, we don't want none of that!!

do you agree that there should not be a mosque in the area that was wiped out by muslim extremists?
on the view, it was discussed with bill o'reilly and the ladies of the view.
joy behar and whoopie flipped because bill said "muslims" were responsible for the carnage there and it would not be appropriate for a mosque in that area.. what do you think?.
I see it as probably the most dangerous religion on the face of the planet with millions of fanatics who hate anything and everything that isn't Islamic. You see it as a misunderstood religion that has alot to offer.
Actually, I see it as both. I would argue that my ability to see both sides of the coin is the distinction between us.

Secondly, and this really get me, they are so desperately trying to frame higher educations as a money-question, but have they ever given other financial advice? They have never said: "Dont become a carpenter, become a mason, there is a lot more money to be made that way!"
That is a really good point Bohm.
If money was really the issue, then JWs should not seek any employment that would make them wealthy. We all know, however, that they know from experience that higher education developes critical-thinking skills> critical-thinking skills developes antipathy towards JW doctrine.

Which we do every day on here when we talk about the WTS and you don't bat an eyelash. We all know that not every single Witness is a bad or evil person, yet we generalize all the time when we talk about how screwed up the religion is. Have you ever protested that? Not that I recall
:) Because that is a hopeless cause since this is an anti-JW DB. In like manner, I don't visit anti-Muslim boards and complain about them generalizing thier hatred of Muslims.
However, I have personally (face-to-face) at dinner expressed just such sentiments to another poster and his wife on this DB, and good luck finding a death-to-JWs post from me.
I do not rail against JWs. I will rail against a specific belief. And...uh oh...here it comes...I think JWs have some value in the world. A classic example is the young man I met this summer in Sacramento, CA. He studied with JWs while in prison for gang violence. His world from birth was so screwed up, that he had no moral compass. He needs the strict, uber-authoritarian world of JWs, or Mormons, or some other such religion, to give him a life plan. Could the blood issue cost him his young life? Yes. But he was on the road to certain death, and he would not have ANY hope of life, but for finding JWs or some other "cult."
My husband owes his life to JWs. He was deep into drug violence and was hiding in the Nevada desert to escape assassination when he decided to call the JW woman who had originally contacted him.
I'm not really sure what your argument is anymore. You vascillate from the whole (Islam is a cult and every member is indoctrinated) to the part (my Muslim dentist is cool and has the right idea).
Usually when arguments break down logically like that, it is because too much emotion is involved. I sense your passion and cry for justice, but your arguments are sloppy and in need of a re-write. That's why others too have asked you to post a bit more carefully.
Well, my mouth dropped open too when I heard her speak, although for a different reason. I was stunned beyond words that anyone who had lost a family member that day could possibly be supporting the very religion that had been responsible for my daughter's death. Something tells me that that woman is in the minority
She may be in the minority. That is irrelevant. Your post was about Amanpour's panel and you commented on how the parents who lost children must feel. Yet, you neglected to speak about the parent who was on the panel and did express her feelings. ??? Was it beyond you to to present an argument counter to your own? Was it beyond you say...while I don't understand her feelings and strongly disagree with them, there was one mother who made a defense of Islam.....?
I think we might actually be of the same mind, because I generally agree with your solutions. I don't approve of honor killings and think Muslims should integrate, and my Muslim friends believe the same.
I just can't deal with your emotions; however, being an INTJ, I do generally get along much better with men than women.

what was it like to live in the 1950's 1960's and early 70's as a jehovah witness.when they started to push the 1975 date..
"Yes, since the summer of 1973 there have been new peaks in pioneers every month. Now there are 20,394 regular and special pioneers in the United States, an all-time peak. That is 5,190 more than there were in February 1973! A 34-percent increase! Does that not warm our hearts? Reports are heard of brothers selling their homes and property and planning to finish out the rest of their days in this old system in the pioneer service. Certainly this is a fine way to spend the short time remaining before the wicked world's end." Kingdom Ministry May 1974 p.3 How Are You Using Your Life?
I was a little off. It was May 1974, yes...by all means...sell your home and pioneer.
what was it like to live in the 1950's 1960's and early 70's as a jehovah witness.when they started to push the 1975 date..
I am wondering at the exageration on here? I remember 1975 as a time that many knew only ones running ahead of themselves truly thought it was Armageddon. We are always getting talks that the end is near from before that day to this. That being said I think those that wanted the reward rather than having a true Faith in Jehovah's promises were weeded out in 1975 for them it was a case of "Armageddon or else I'm leaving" which is very telling.
I was 16 in 1975. Does anyone have a copy of the Sept/Oct./Nov ??? 1974 KM that has the article praising people who are "selling their homes so they can pioneer in the LAST FEW MONTHS of this system of things."
"If you are a young person, you also need to face the fact that you will never grow old in this present system of things. Why not? Because all the evidence in fulfillment of Bible prophecy indicates that this corrupt system is due to end in a few years. Of the generation that observed the beginning of the "last days" in 1914, Jesus foretold: "This generation will by no means pass away until all these things occur."-Matt. 24:34. Therefore, as a young person, you will never fulfill any career that this system offers. If you are in highschool and thinking about a college education, it means at least four, perhaps even six or eight more years to graduate into a specialized career. But where will this system of things be by that time? It will be well on the way toward its finish, if not actually gone!" Awake!1969 May 22 p.15
11/8/74 Awake
Today there is a great crowd of people who are confident that a destruction of even greater magnitude is now imminent. The evidence is that Jesus’ prophecy will shortly have a major fulfillment, upon this entire system of things. This has been a major factor in influencing many couples to decide not to have children at this time. They have chosen to remain childless so that they would be less encumbered to carry out the instructions of Jesus Christ to preach the good news of God’s kingdom earth wide before the end of this system comes.—Matt. 24:14

Please argue this with some thought and not just reaction.
If you review past Islam/Muslim/Middle East threads, you will see that Mary lacks that ability.

So I'm a bigot because I don't think Islam deserves the time of day
No. You're a bigot because you have repeatedly denigrated masses of people you don't know by lumping them into an evil and "other" category based upon religious identification alone.
As a JW, you were a religious bigot (JW "in"-everyone else "out"), and you remain a religious bigot (non-Muslims "in"-Muslims "out"). All you have done is rearrange some labels.

Ya. I wonder if you'd feel the same way if your husband or son or daughter had been in one of the towers that day and never came home. Everyone's got Rights, but common sense has apparently gone by the way side.
If we watched the same show (Christiane Amanpour's ??) then you are aware that there was a mother on the panel whose pregnant daughter was in the towers and was killed.
She gave a very passionate and cogent defense of Islam, and she wants the Cultural Center built (the mosque portion has been functioning at that site for quite some time) Her reasoning was that the success of our religious, cultural, and ethnic plurality is precisely what Bin Laden attacked that day, and that every move we make away from embracing that plurality is a win for Bin Laden, which renders her daughter's death meaningless.
As for how I would feel...when I heard this mother speak, my mouth dropped open, and I told my husband, "OMG. I never looked at it from that perspective. What if ____ or _____ had been killed there. I would be furious at all these anti-mosque people for just those same reasons." So Mary, I already crossed that bridge in my mind.
I can see that you have a LOT of passion for your position, and you frequently rail about Islam. But what solutions do you propose?
This situation is not at all like your specious Nazi-pacification analogy. That dealt with a jurisdictionally defined nation-state with clear borders and a homogeneous population. We are dealing with an ideology of hate that spans the world and hides in a religious group of 1.5 billion people.
So let's put Mary in charge. What plans would you implement, besides just screaming in posts?
